Plastic versus Price
Sorry it's been a while since my last post but I've hit a problem that I knew I would and there's not going to be a quick solution unless you have money to spare!
Trying to use an alternative to plastic was always going to be a challenge, especially when it's used so widely and available so cheaply.
So when I tried to switch to glass bottles when buying milk I didn't realise just how expensive it would be. Don't get me wrong, I knew I'd have to pay more and was in fact more than happy to pay that little bit extra to do my bit for the environment, as well as supporting our local milkman, but just hoooow much made me re-think my good intentions.
Bearing in mind my family get through at least a dozen pints of milk every week, supermarket shopping was costing approx £1.50* for a 6pt plastic bottle compared to 81p* for a 1pt glass bottle from our local milkman supplier. I'm sure I don't have to do the maths to show you just how much more I would be spending every week if I were to switch to glass. If money was not an issue I would gladly use the milkman without a doubt, the service received was excellent, the ordering simple and the products delicious! But sadly money is an issue (well for us anyway).
Has this made me quite my new year's resolution?
Hell no! It's made me all more determined to seek another supplier of glass bottled milk that won't damage our pockets as well as our environment.
So until I fill you in on my findings...
